The Electoral Commission has called for involvement of all political leaders in urging their supporters to observe all the set SOP’s as emphasized by the Ministry of Health.
This comes as several political leaders continue organizing themselves to select flag bearers in various political positions ahead of the general elections set for early next year.
Speaking at an event to celebrate the international day of democracy held in Kampala under the theme “Covid19, a spotlight on Democracy”, the commission’s Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama condemned the violence and failure to observe SOP’s in the recently concluded NRM primaries.
He said that such actions not only undermine democracy but also expose Ugandans to the deadly disease. “That was most unfortunate, we have all seen the pictures on our screens and in the media, the general community happiness and mingling like there is no covid, very unfortunate.”
“The other aspect which was unfortunate was the violence that was exhibited in some areas. Again, that was most unfortunate. The combination of violence and failure to observe the required SOP’s spells disaster to our democratic processes and also to our wellbeing in the midst of this challenge.”
